ChinaWays was founded by Gwendolyn Tates. She is a sinologist, graduated from Leiden University (1984) and as from 1981-'82, when she was on a scholarship at Beijing University, she visited China numerous times.

As staff officer to the Executive Board at ING Group, she was closely involved in ING's China business, which evolved from zero to full-scale. In this period of 22 years much practical experience of doing business with China was gained and an extensive network built.

As partner in a consultancy and later in her own company ChinaWays she started giving workshops and training to a varied group of people such as expats, students from high school level to university level, diplomats, civil servants, businessmen, middle and high level management, all of various nationalities. In order to professionalize her teaching abilities, she accomplished a Master degree in Teaching Chinese Language and Culture, cum laude, at Leiden University in 2012. Gwendolyn Tates became a Berlitz COA Certified Professional in February 2013.
