First students to sit for the exam of Chinese

For the first time it was possible to officially sit for the exam of Chinese in Dutch secondary education. The Volkskrant, a national newspaper, spent an afternoon at Rijnlands Lyceum and reported on the exam, interviewing students and their teacher.

Celebration at the Chinese Embassy

On June 28, 2024, for the first time ever, a ‘Chinese Language and Culture Day ‘ was organised by Nuffic together with the Chinese Embassy. Students and teachers of ten school were invited and listened to a speech of the Ambassador, a teacher and a student, all in Chinese (the Ambassador spoke English though!). We watched Chinese painting and noodle making and enjoyed the wonderful lunch. A very special event!

In April 2024, after five years, our physical exchange with Tong’an Nr 1 Middle School was resumed. With 18 students a 9-day visit was paid to Xiamen, where we first acclimatised in a tulou among the tea fields and then were guests of our partner school.

The subject of Chinese Language and Culture is firmly established at RLW. Teacher Gwendolyn Tates organised an event with acrobats from Nanjing performing at school. She hopes that many young people will want to learn Chinese.
